Søren Boy Holst wins Danish National Championships

The final round of the Danish Electric On-Road Nationals was held on the nice asphalt track in Odense, which is already famous for HC Andersen and DHI-Cup. The battle for the Danish TC SuperStock Championships was going to be a thriller, as 4 drivers could win. To spice it up even more, 5 good drivers from German attended the race as well. The track is big with an interesting layout, but with a low to medium grip level. The weather was perfect for practice on Saturday, but the prediction for Sunday was a little bit more risky.

Usually the first round of qualifying is great for everyone due to new tires, but on this track the Sorex tires seemed to be better the second time out, for some it was worse than others. The first round was a close battle between Björn Christiansen (Xray) from Germany, Frederik Broløs (Yokomo), Nicolai Nielsen (Serpent) and Søren Boy Holst (VBC). These 4 guys had a very close battle from start to end. Søren was struggling with a loose rear end on the new tires, and on the very last lap he rolled the car and lost 4 seconds, which gave a 6th place in the round. Björn took the first round ahead of Frederik and Nicolai.

Before the second round Søren had to do something to get back into the game and decided to change to thinner shock oil, and change camber and downstop settings in the rear, to gain more grip. These changes combined with second time on the tires, seemed to be a good idea. The battle with Björn was close, but Søren took the overall win with 0,3 sec ahead of Björn, who had 2 seconds to Frederik.

The third and final round would be decisive with the round by round system. This time Björn had the upper hand and won ahead of Søren, with the same 0,3 seconds, and Frederik was 0,3 sec behind. Wow, so close racing!

SuperStock top 5 after qualifying:
1. Björn Christiansen - Xray T4
2. Søren Boy Holst - VBC Ghost EVO Carbon
3. Frederik Broløs - Yokomo BD7
4. Nicolai Nielsen - Serpent S411
5. Steven Olsen - Schumacher Mi5

If the racing wasn’t close enough, and the championship battle wasn’t close enough, the goods of weather decided to blend in another spice. As the cars were warming up for the first final, it started to rain a little bit. Not enough for rain tires, but enough to change the grip level. In the first turn all cars drove very wide, sliding over the oily tires, and everyone had to be super smooth in and out. Søren made a mistake in turn 3 and almost ended in the grass. He fought his way back to the top, and passed the other guys. As the tires got warmer, and got rid of the additive, the grip came up again, and Frederik seemed to be the fastest guy on track, trying to catch Søren. That was a close battle till the tone, that Søren could win with only 0,1 second!

Final run 2 was on a dry track with lap times back to normal. Björn took off and kept the lead ahead of Søren and Frederik. On lap 3 Frederik bumped into the rear of Sørens car, and both spun before the main straight where they could see a couple of drivers passing them. They fought back again but on lap 8 Nicolai on 2nd place rolled the car just in front of Søren, who couldn’t avoid driving through him, while Frederik could use the opportunity to pass. Søren was right behind for the rest of the final and took 3rd place with 0,2 second behind Frederik. Björn won the final.

So everything would be decided in the third and last final. Søren knew he could be champion if Björn won the race, so the plan was to stay behind and keep Frederik from passing. That was a good plan for the first half of the final, until Björn made a small mistake and rolled the car. Søren and Frederik had to fight for the win, the win of the day and the win of the championship. With lots of experience in the bag pack and a great car, Søren took the overall win with 1 second ahead of Frederik and Björn on third place, and thereby the overall win of the Danish SuperStock Championships 2015. Even though Søren had tried it many times before with 25 years’ experience, he was very proud to win the title, and dedicated this win to the new sponsor VBC Racing. “The VBC Ghost EVO is the best car I have had for many Years, and the guys in the team are really nice and good to help. Especially thanks to Ryan Maker, who had helped me with good ideas and inputs for the setup :)
