Winter points Points round 6.

This was my first real race with the b7, I had done a club race before that and the car felt great, however today I switched to smoothie 2s, which have much more grip than gold ellipses, this required me to switch pills, I went from 1 in (c) and 1 down in (d) to 1 down on both blocks. I liked the way anti-squat felt on the gold ellipses, but I did not like it on smoothies, and my car was traction rolling, so I increased track width on the rear end, which got rid of my rolling problem.

Controlled practice session #1:

  • car felt pretty good, made a few changed in attempt to make it feel better
  • Increased Ackermann shins by 1mm and it made my cars steering profile feel smoother and easier to drive.
  • Raised rear (inner) ball by 1mm and it made it faster in my opinion, had much more grip, however we did do track maintenance before that run.
  • Went to the lowest axle height (+0), it sucked, at Fastlane at least. I hit brakes I spin, I reverted and went to 0mm on outer ball in the rear, it felt better, wasn’t quite fast as the previous 1mm though
  • Tried bumping it up to 2mm on outer ballstud and it felt amazing, 15.0 was all I could hit with some consistent 15.2s I had a little rolling, with some new tires this was the fastest combination of the day while being easy to drive
  • 1up springs (I had used before today) made the car have more pack and it felt better overall on bumpier tracks
End of the day setup

Controlled practice session 2:

Rear end changes
  • First thing I did was take away the shims on the hub, i didn’t know what it would do, so i didn’t want to change the whole link at once, I had less mid corner steering I changed some more ballstud I had way less mid corner steering, my car dove straight into the corner, but then just pushed out. It felt like it needed some help transferring weight forward, so I read some other setups and remembered that battery position existed I tried moving my battery forward, it instantly revived all that mid corner I was looking for, it felt faster too
Shock package + lap times
  • I did a LOT to make my shocks work better I drilled out some pistons and changed some fluids
  • Overall just made my car feel super soft, forgiving and had tons of pack, it didn’t really affect my steering profile
  • As the day started, I got 15.5, then I changed my rear ballstud and pushed my lipo forward and couldn’t find my lap times because timing didn’t work for some reason, then with the shock setup I got 15.3 and I changed my tires and got 15.1s the track was also slower, my buddies there (who also work there) agreed, I don’t know if my lap times are going to be any better or not, but my car definitely feels better and I think it’s faster, but regardless it is atleast fast enough to hit the same laps and it’s easier to drive, but I can’t keep my car from rolling, I think I should try some ARBs.
End of the day setup

2024.04.13 - club

This was a VERY small club race so the only important bit was the mains.
My only changes up until this point were: stop saucing the rear sidewall, as the track had grooved up since last big race (this solved my rolling issue) and I added 1mm in front bulkhead shims.

End of the day / current setup

Changes and Affects
  • Raising the inner / lowering the outer ball increases a lot of chassis roll
  • Chassis roll effects the car most mid corner, where your at a constant speed and relying on it to cause weight transfer, instead of springs or inertia (more roll = more grip at that end of the car)
  • Lower axle height (higher hinge pin) made the car spin. It made the car have less mid corner steering as well, I think that’s was from the outer ball lowering. (this will be better for higher grip)
  • Going to the 1up springs made the car just better, longer springs = more pack + forgiving
  • Changing my pistons, along with shock oil, made the car forgiving. Had some added pack I’m not sure if it was really worth all the work getting those pistons drilled
  • Removing holes from the hub made the link longer, so I had a lower rear roll center (more rear roll) but its much more subtle than changing the ball heights
