B6.1 Options Build

Once again Team Associated has raised the bar for the 2wd off-road buggy class with the recent releases of the B6.1, B6.1D, and B6.1 Factory Lite kits. These new buggies have received several updates, especially in the rear section of the vehicle. However, these new kits also do share a lot of common parts with the previously released B6 and B6D too. As always, JConcepts is on the cutting edge on product development for these new kits, and we previously covered option parts for the B6D in an earlier edition of The Garage. So in this fresh edition of The Garage we will go over option parts that were previously developed for the B6D that are still compatible with the new platform, plus some new and exciting releases for the B6.1 series.

Again with the new B6.1 generation there are three kits to choose from, but for this edition of The Garage we will work with the B6.1D kit.

As usual I'll follow the manual closely for this build, but from time to time I'll deviate from it.

The first option item to discuss for this build are the JConcepts Aluminum Steering Bellcranks. These were previously released for the B6 and B6D, but they also work for the B6.1 series too.

As you can see the geometry is nearly identical to the OEM part, but instead of using plastic JConcepts decided to offer racers a steering bellcrank forged from aluminum instead. If you feel like you need a stiffer response to your steering, then the aluminum material will provide a better feel without gaining additional weight too.

These are available in both black and blue color options, but for this build we will only feature parts anodized in black. Other features include a laser engraved JC logo and machined chamfered silver edging along the top surface edge.

When assembling your complete steering rack make sure to use a light thread locker on the 5mm ballstud now since it will be installed into an aluminum part.

Here you can see the entire steering assembly completely assembled.

The next part to work on according to the manual is the front ballstud mount. JConcepts first offered their take on it as the Front Camber Link Mount Bulkhead option part for the B6 and B6D, but it also works for the B6.1 series as well.

This is comprised of aluminum with silver edges to highlight its features.

This option part comes unassembled, but all the needed hardware and instructions are also included.

The included front camber link mount includes the OEM three mounting holes for the front ball studs. The bulkhead syncs up with camber link and not only includes silver edging but also a JC laser etched logo too. This piece is also available in both black and blue colors too. The JConcepts Front Camber Link Mount Bulkhead also gives you some more tuning options since you can adjust the weight of your car as indicated below:

  • Team Associated front plastic camber link mount and bulkhead with plastic AE suspension mount = ~14.8gms
  • Team Associated front plastic camber link mount and bulkhead with aluminum AE suspension mount = ~20.3gms
  • JConcepts front camber link mount and bulkhead with plastic AE suspension mount = ~28.5gms
  • JConcepts front camber link mount and bulkhead with aluminum AE suspension mount = ~34.0gms
  • Team Associated front plastic camber link mount and bulkhead with brass AE suspension mount = ~41.7gms
  • JConcepts front camber link mount and bulkhead with brass AE suspension mount = ~55.4gms

To install this piece add some blue thread lock to the included 3x12mm BHCS screws for the mount.

Then install the screws through the front camber link mount into the bulkhead. Also use some thread lock when installing the front ball studs now too.

Then I grabbed the steering assembly and installed it into the bulkhead with again a small amount of blue thread lock.

And when installing the bulkhead again use some thread locker since the front bulkhead is now made of aluminum.

The same goes for the rest of the screws used for the top plate and front bumper.

One thing to note when installing the front bulkhead is that the JConcepts instructions state to use the kit's 12mm BHCS that run through the top plate and into the bulkhead. Those instructions were written for the B6 series, but as you can see above the B6.1 lineup uses 10m BHCS now. You can opt to use the longer 12mm BHCS, otherwise the 10mm BHCS will work too. Next it was time to flip over the buggy and keep working on the front end.

That brought me to the next option part which was the JConcepts Carbon Fiber Front Shock Tower for gullwing a-arms. This is a new option part that is only compatible with the B6.1 series kits.

The JConcepts front shock tower is comprised of 4mm thick carbon fiber, with a milled JC logo.

There is also a milled “G” indicator so you know what type of tower you are using from a glance. And a few sections of the tower have been strategically milled out so that you decrease the overall weight while not sacrificing more durability.

The tower also includes the three standard shock mounting positions, but one thing to note is that technically the kit's plastic front shock tower cover is incompatible.

Here you can see the kit's guard on the JConcepts front tower. You can make it work depending on which mounting holes you are using, but since they don't 100% match up they are not listed as compatible.

Since we are working on the front shock tower that naturally leads us to the next option part to discuss. The JConcepts Fin Titanium Shock Stand-Offs are compatible with both the B6, B6.1, and B64 series vehicles.

The kit's shock bushing is made of aluminum and uses a one-piece design. A 20mm BHCS passes through it to mount to the front shock tower and also increase its strength. JConcepts decided to do something different with their Fin Titanium Shock Stand-Offs since they use two parts and also includes shorter 3x8mm BHCS screws. As the name implies they are constructed from titanium which keeps them strong without adding additional weight. Also included are white Delrin pivot bushings which act as a contact point between your Fin Stand-Offs and shock caps.

That way your shock caps don't get damaged and these bushings are also sold separately so they can be easily replaced if needed.

When assembled the Fin Titanium Shock Stand-Offs are the same length as the stock part.

To install them place the Delrin pivot bushings over the stand-offs. Then you will need to install the included 3x8mm BHCS through the shock tower.

Since you are working with two metal surfaces make sure to add some blue thread locks to these screws, then tighten them into the stand-offs till there are snug.

After that is was time to work on the front axles and steering blocks. The JConcepts Titanium Front Axle Set was first available for the B6 series and they are also work for the new B6.1 series.

The JConcepts front axle is the same length as its stock counterpart, but instead of aluminum it is comprised of titanium.

This keeps the axle light while increasing it strength in the same process, but it also offers some more tuning options.

Included with the JConcepts Titanium Front Axle Set are black 1mm spacers. If a driver wants to slightly adjust the front track width of their buggy they can simply move the spacer around on the axle.

So, for example, if you want to use the kit's stock width setting then place the spacer on the outside of the steering block, and that's what I did for this build. But if you need a narrower track width then place this spacer on the backside of the axle.

Once I had my spacer in place I then secured the front axle into the steering block with the kit's 3x6mm BHCS screw and some thread lock.

The next option part covered in the manual was the steering block arms. JConcepts offers a Carbon Fiber Steering Arm that is compatible with both the B6 and B6.1 series.

The kit's +1 steering block arms are comprised of black plastic, and JConcepts crafted their steering arms from 2.5mm carbon fiber and use the same mounting holes as the stock part.

Each arm weighs under 1g each, and they can be installed on either side of your vehicle.

After installing a few kit components, the next stop was the D-Mount. The JConcepts Rear Suspension D-Mount works with both the B6 and B6.1 vehicles.

The JConcepts D-Mount is comprised of aluminum in both blue and black color options.

It also features chamfer highlighted edging, a JConcepts logo on the back side, and an easy to read part indicator on the inside.

And as a tuning option they also offer a brass 12g rear suspension mount too.

Both D-Mounts use the same overall geometry of the kit part and are compatible with the Associated pill inserts.

But for this build I elected to use the black aluminum option part. After that I started to build the differential and gearbox which brings me to the next option part.

The JConcepts Rear Ball-Stud Mount is available in either blue or black anodizing, and they are both constructed of CNC-machined aluminum. This is a new part exclusive to the B6.1 series.

As you can see the JConcepts mount is nearly identical to the stock component, including the standard three setup holes.

But there are a few differences like the chamfered silver edging that highlights the shape of the mount. Another is the extra material added to the main “U-brace” to increase its rigidity. Before I install it onto the gearbox I first need to talk about the next JConcepts option part.

The manual calls for ballstud washers installed onto the rear ballstud mount, but for this build I elected to use the Dirt Racing Products Dirt Washers.

Each package of the Dirt Washers includes two 2-3mm washers, four 1-2mm washers, and four .5mm washers. These washers are also compatible with various RC vehicles that requires washers with these specs.

The basic idea behind these washers is that for example if you need to make a quick adjustment you can simply flip a washer over to move from 2mm to 3mm instead of adding more washers to your ball stud.

NOTE: These were previously covered in more detail in a previous version of The Garage which you can read here: http://www.jconcepts.net/garage/projects/dirt-products-2

When building the B6.1D the manual called for 2mm blue aluminum washers under each ballstud on the rear mount, so I used the 2-3mm Dirt Washers instead.

Again, since we are working with metal on metal a small dab of thread locker is required to keep it secure.

Once I had those installed into the JConcepts Rear Ball-Stud Mount I used the remaining Dirt Washers to replace some of the kit washers I used earlier on in the build.

Once that was complete I went back to work on the transmission which brings me to the next option part.

New for the B6.1 series is the JConcepts 3-Gear Laydown | Layback Transmission Plate.

The JConcepts plate is constructed of machined 3mm aluminum and available in either blue or black color options.

A honeycomb pattern has been milled from the aluminum to reduce its overall weight without sacrificing any of its strength. The milling also enhances its look to go along with the chamfer highlighted edges.

The JConcepts plate is also compatible with the kit's spur gear guard too.

Next up was the rear shock tower. JConcepts offers both a standard and long height rear shock tower and both are new for the B6.1 series. For this build I'll use the long height tower since that is what the manual calls for.

The JConcepts Carbon Fiber Rear Long Shock Tower is constructed of 4mm thick carbon fiber material.

Strategic milling has been performed on the tower to reduce its overall mass without sacrificing any durability. There is also an “L” engraved into the front of the tower so a driver can tell at a glance which tower they are running.

Just like the front shock tower, the rear tower also requires shock bushings but slightly longer at 12mm. So once again JConcepts has provided an alternative to the OEM parts.

Just like the font stand-offs, the JConcepts Fin Titanium Long Shock Stand-Offs use a two-piece design and are compatible with the B6, B6.1, and B64 series vehicles. Since these are the longer version, they now include two 3x10mm BHCS as well. But the included Delrin pivot bushings are the same dimensions as the standard Stand-Offs.

Here you can see again that when assembled they are the same length as the stock parts.

To install them place the 3x10mm BHCS through the shock mounting location of your choice then add some blue thread lock to it.

The base of all of the JConcepts Fin Titanium Shock Stand-Offs are7mm so tightening them down is easy thanks to the Combo Thumb Wrench.

NOTE: For more information about the Combo Thumb Wrench, please read this earlier edition of The Garage: http://www.jconcepts.net/garage/projects/combo-thumb-wrench

After finishing the rear tower, I built the rear hubs and then CVAs which lead me to the next JConcepts option part, the 7mm Light-Weight Hex Adapter. These adapters were first available for the B6 lineup but they also work with the new B6.1 series too.

The B6.1D comes standard with a 7mm clamping hex to use with the CVAs. As an alternative JConcepts also offers a 7mm clamping hex in both blue and black anodizing, but it also has a few distinct features.

Now at first it might look like the JConcepts 7mm Light-Weight Hex Adapter is narrower than the stock counterpart, but actually it's not. It looks narrower since material has been removed from the part of the hex that clamps down on the CVA towards the hubs bearing. And outside of that pockets of material have been removed too. These features help to reduce the total rotating weight of your rear tires and wheels. Silver chamfer edging helps to accent this piece, and a JC trademark and width indicator are both laser etched into the hex too.

To install them set the CVA wheel hex pin into the CVA axle then slip the JConcepts 7mm Light-Weight Hex Adapter onto the axle.

Then use the included 1.6mm SCHS with some thread locker to secure the 7mm Light-Weight Hex Adapters into place.

Now it was time to work on the steering and camber turnbuckles. JConcepts released their Fin Titanium Turnbuckle Set for the B6 and it is also congruent with the new B6.1 series.

The B6.1D's turnbuckles are comprised of steel with a polished finish and left-hand thread indicators. For driver's looking for a little more strength and pizzazz the JConcepts turnbuckles are constructed from machined, high-grade titanium material with an aesthetically pleasing appearance.

This is achieved by placing a hex shaped piece in the middle of the turnbuckle with a unique “finned” look to it. Each side uses a 3mm left and right-hand thread, and they also include left hand thread indicators to help you install them correctly.

The JConcepts Fin Titanium Turnbuckles fit perfectly into the kit's ballcups and installation and adjustments are made easier with the JConcepts Fin Turnbuckle Wrench.

Up next were the shocks and JConcepts offers a variety of option parts for them. These items were first designed “way back” for the B5M, but they are still compatible with the B6 and 6.1 vehicles from Team Associated, so let's look review each option part one at a time.

One of the first things needed to assemble the V2 shocks for the B6.1D is to attach the VCS Shock Bottom Cap to the V2 shock bodies.

The JConcepts VCS Shock Bottom Cap is available in both blue and black color options and constructed of light-weight aluminum.

There are two knurling rings for times when you need to get a grip, and resting between them are etched JC and JConcepts.net logos of authenticity. Also included are blue VCS3 shock bottom cap o-rings that are the same specs as the OEM rings.

The B6.1D includes 12mm shock cap o-rings that are colored in black. You can always use those for your car's build, but for this story I wanted to replace them with JConcepts' distinct blue o-rings. So, I opened a package of their 12mm AE O-Ring Shock Set.

This set not only includes the o-rings for the top of the shock bodies, but also the VCS3 Shock Bottom Caps and 12mm Threaded Collars. So, in one package you get an entire replacement set of o-rings for four shocks.

Now that the shocks were assembled the next step in the manual was to fill them, but I want to go over a few more option items first.

Adjusting the ride height on this buggy would be handled by the JConcepts Fin 12mm Shock Collars.

The JConcepts Fin 12mm Shock Collars are comprised of aluminum and there are two color options to choose from, black or blue.

Knurling has been added to the aluminum to aid you when you need to make adjustments and blue o-rings are also included.

There is a JC etched logo in the knurling ring, and on the opposite side is a notch so you can keep track of your ride height calibration.

Now it was time to fill up the assembled shocks.

Aiding me in this task was the JConcepts Exo 10th Scale Shock Stand and Cup. This device has four long, vertical holes that are designed to hold your shock bodies while you fill them up with oil. The holes run the entire length of the stand so if so desired you can flip the stand over to the opposite side for a different look and feel. And the molded rubber cup that wraps around it can be removed to hold small parts during your shock build too.

As I let the air bubbles rise to the top it was time to prep the next option part which is the JConcepts Fin 12mm V2 Shock Caps.

The stock shock caps are made from molded, black plastic with bleeding holes. As an alternative, the JConcepts caps are crafted from lightweight aluminum and available in both blue and black color options.

The caps have a small, knurled section along the bottom circumference, and there is also a bleeder hole too. Clear washers and 2x4mm BHCS screws for the bleeder hole come standard with the caps as well. On the opposite side of the cap from the bleeder hole is an etched authentic JC logo.

The bleeding process went smooth with help from the Exo 10th Scale Shock Stand and Cup, so I made quick work of all four shocks.

Now it was time to set the springs in place and holding them intact would be the JConcepts Fin Shock 5mm Off-Set Spring Cups.

The stock 5mm spring cups are formed from molded, black plastic. JConcepts went a different route and their 5mm cups are forged from aluminum, and once again can be selected in popular blue or black color options. But there are a few key differences between these different shock cups besides the materials used to create them.

Once nice feature is that the JConcepts cups decrease the chances of them falling off during a run since the path to remove them involve two different movements as you can see above.

Each cup is lightened up more thanks to small circular cutouts along the sidewall of the cup, and there is an etched JConcepts.net logo and off-set indicator too.

And on the bottom, some machined chamfered silver edging has been added to enhance its overall looks.

Once all four shocks were complete I installed them onto the B6.1D.

After the shocks are installed the manual instructs you to install the majority of the electronics next, but we are going to go off script again and will install them all in a little bit.

But speaking of electronics, before we even can install a battery pack we need a way to lock it in place which brings me to the next options part from JConcepts.

The stock battery strap is designed to reach across the battery and hold it in place with the included blue thumb screws. JConcepts decided to take a different approach and simply secure your pack by clamping down on each end of it. This new item is also compatible with both the B6 and B6.1 buggies.

The Swing Operated Battery Retainer Set includes two aluminum rails, two carbon fiber “swing” arms, two steel top hat bushings for the carbon arms, four 3x16mm BHCS screws, and multiple stand-offs which I'll cover in a few minutes. The rails are available in popular blue and black color options, and the edges have received chamfered highlighting to enhance its looks.

A laser etched JConcepts.net logo is prominently displayed on each outer wall of the rails.

The stock battery strap has five different mounting holes to adjust where your pack sits on the chassis. The Swing Operated Battery Retainer goes a little further and offers you nine different positions to help you with your electronics layout.

The included larger stand-offs are 7mm tall, while the shorter, pedestal stand-offs are 6.3mm. There are also 2mm spacers that can be used to raise the rails even higher if needed. But depending on your battery pack and setup you may have to use some 3mm I.D. washers to get that perfect custom fit.

Also included are instructions to help you determine how to install the strap, but again depending on your pack's dimensions you might have to customize the setup a little more.

For this build that is exactly what I did since I'm using Reedy's Zappers SG 3600mAh 110C 7.6V LP Shorty pack (more on that later on). So to get the right fit I cracked open a package of the JConcepts Metric Washer Set.

Since this Reedy pack was very low profile I needed to shim the rails with two 1mm thick washers.

To assemble the Swing Operated Battery Retainer set I placed the steel top hat bushings in the carbon fiber swing arms then moved the 3x16mm screws through them both. After determining which rear hole to use on the aluminum rails I placed the screw through that and into the B6.1D's side rails.

Then for the front screw that is used to loosen the swing arms, I placed the 1mm washer between it and the aluminum rails and sunk the two remaining 3x16mm screws into each side rail.

Now that the battery was secured I decided to install another JConcepts option item.

The Dirt Racing Products Dirt Plugs were previously covered in an earlier edition of The Garage, but I'll give a quick overview how they can benefit you and show how to install them too.

These small, black rubber plugs are intended to fill the open mounting holes on your shock towers. This is more beneficial to 1:10 2wd and 4wd buggies since their shock towers are always exposed, but you can use them in stadium and short course trucks too.

Each package comes with 10 plugs and you can custom trim them to the length you need.

Once these are installed dirt and debris won't catch in the unused holes on your shocks now.

Now let's go over all the electronics used for this build and then install them into the B6.1D.

Since we just worked with the battery let's start with that first. Powering the B6.1D is Reedy's Zappers SG 3600mAh 110C 7.6V LP Shorty pack.

This pack is constructed from silicon graphene which has many features like a lower internal resistance, improved cycle-life, lower operating temps, and an increased voltage output. The power is released via the 5mm sockets snug inside the pack's hard case, and it also includes two male ESC 5mm plugs and a 2mm balance connector.

Since this is a silicon graphene pack it can be safely charged to 4.35V/cell with a compatible charger. And for events that require a maximum of 4.20V/cell you can safely charge it to that limit and still reap the benefits of the flatter discharge curve.

As I showed earlier this pack fits perfectly into the B6.1D and it locked into place with the Swing Operated Battery Retainer Set.

Now let's take a look at the servo used for this build. Reedy's RS0806 LP Digital HV Hi-Speed Competition Servo was designed for today's 1:10 touring cars, 2wd and 4wd buggies.

This high-speed servo is packed with features like metal gears, an aluminum mid case for lowering operating temps, and a compact, low-profile design. It is also high voltage compatible which means that you can increase the BEC in your ESC without damaging it.

Speaking of ESC, for this build I used Reedy's Blackbox 600Z Zero-Timing ESC.

This ESC is designed for entry level spec classes, and it includes many adjustable brake and throttle functions.

The 600z use a very small footprint and is very light thanks to the plastic case and low profile heat sink.

Braking and throttle are adjusted via the on-board, single programming button, and it is ROAR approved for spec classes since it uses Zero-timing.

It is compatible with motors down to 13.5 turns, and comes pre-assembled with silicone power wires and a compact external capacitor.

Next, let's take a look at the power plant for this build.

Reedy's S-Plus 17.5 Competition Spec Class Motor is Reedy's most powerful spec motor to date. This is achieved by using a thin leg stator which enables them to use shorter wires. The smaller wires decrease the amount of resistance in the motor, and it also lowers its weight too.

Air flow has been increased by removing much of the material from the motor can, and also helps to reduce the motor's weight.

The back plate has also been sectioned out to decrease the weight of the motor, and the overall length has been reduced by just over 2mm which aids in left to right balance, plus moves more mass towards the center of the vehicle.

The motor is ROAR approved for spec racing, and uses silver-plated solder tabs, precision ball bearings, and a high-strength, balanced rotor.

The final piece to this electronics puzzle was Futaba's R304SB-E T-FHSS 4-Channel Telemetry 2.4GHz receiver.

This four-channel receiver is designed for only electric vehicles which allows it to use a non-exposed built-in antenna. It is also telemetry enabled and is compatible with all Futaba T-FHSS telemetry transmitters. Even though we have introduced all the electronics now we still need to go over a few more items before putting them into place.

The kit doesn't include any tires or wheels, so for this build I decided to use JConcepts' white Mono 12mm hex front and rear wheels with Gold Octagons. Let's briefly go over the mounting process.

First, I used the JConcepts Fin Reamer to widen the venting holes in the Mono wheels.

NOTE: This reamer was covered in an earlier edition of The Garage which you can view with this link: http://www.jconcepts.net/garage/projects/jconcepts-fin-reamer

Then I used some cleaner and a black JConcepts Microfiber Towel to clean both the wheels and tires.

NOTE: This towel is also available in blue or yellow too.

Now that both mounting surfaces were clean it was time to glue them together. So, I elected to use yellow Dirt Racing Products Dirt Bands with the JConcepts Thin Advanced Formulated Tire Glue. The thin glue dries fast and the bands keep both components in place while they dried.

Once they were dry it was time to balance them with the JConcepts Tire Balancer.

NOTE: Use this link to read an earlier edition of The Garage where I dive more into this balancer: http://www.jconcepts.net/garage/projects/tire-balancer

As I spun the tires a few times on the balancer it was very clear which spot was the heaviest so I used the Dirt Racing Products Permanent Dual Tip Pen Set to mark the tire's heaviest spot. Then I used some modeling clay to counter balance the wheels. Now that the tires were ready I needed to install them onto the B6.1D which brings me to the next JConcepts option parts.

NOTE: For more info on these pens, please use this link for an earlier edition of The Garage:

http://www.jconcepts.net/garage/projects/dirt-products-2

Securing the Mono wheel and Octagons tires combo to the B6.1D would be handled by the JConcepts 4mm Large Flange Serrated Locknuts. These locknuts work for a variety of 2wd buggies including the B6 and B6.1 lineup.

The locknuts that come with the kit have a large flange with serration on the flip side, but JConcepts uses a slighter larger flange which will cover more surface area and provide more wheel support.

The larger flange also means that the serrations are larger too which help to keep your wheels tight so they don't become loose during your run. These light-weight aluminum 4mm Large Flange Serrated Locknuts are also available in both blue and back color choices.

And when thrown on a scale they weigh about 3g less than the OEM part which is key to drivers in spec classes looking for an extra edge.

Using the trusty 7mm Fin Quick-Spin Wrench I made quick work of mounting all four tires before I moved onto the next option part.

The B6.1D uses a 7075 aluminum chassis and to help you protect your investment JConcepts has once again designed a Precut Chassis Protective Sheet. This sheet is a new item that is only compatible with the B6.1 series.

Two sheets are included in each package, plus there is an additional “tail” on each one. The sheet is precut to fit the B6.1D without any modifications, and its slick surface will decrease the friction between the bottom of your chassis and the track surface.

Installation instructions are printed on each sheet and we'll walk through the application process in more detail next. Since this is a new kit build I can skip step #1 since the chassis surface is already clean.

Then I need to take off the front bumper by removing two M3x16mm FHCS.

Then you carefully peel off the sheet, line it up on the chassis, and then smooth it flat. Start on one end then work your way across so you can work out any air bubbles. Then reinstall the bumper again.

Now let's go back to work on the electronics and cover a few option parts JConcepts offers for your servo. First up is the Fin Titanium Steering Turnbuckle. This part was first introduced for the B6 platform and it still works with the 6.1 series too.

This 10mm long steering turnbuckle is comprised of machined titanium material which reduces its weight and improves its strength levels too.

In the middle rests a square adjustment nut that eliminates the need for the kit's blue 1mm aluminum washer.

This simplifies the install process and also prevents you from tightening one link past the center point.

The Fin Titanium Steering Turnbuckle uses the standardized 3mm thread base on each end, and installing the links was easy thanks to the JConcepts Fin Turnbuckle Wrench.

Here you can see the assembled steering link.

The next option part centered around the servo is the JConcepts Servo Mount Bracket. This option piece can be used in both B6 and B6.1 vehicles.

The stock servo mounts are installed on each side of the servo and then fastened to the side rails. The JConcepts Servo Mount Bracket uses a different design that both attaches to the sides of the servo plus runs across the top of it of it too.

It is crafted of aluminum and available in two color options, black or blue. An etched JConcepts.net logo rests firmly on top of the “bridge” that runs over the servo.

Silver chamfering has been added to edges to accent the design of this mount, and it also includes two 3x6mm set screws. The set screws are for the installation of this mount which we'll go over now.

First you need to set your servo horn in the correct position if this a new installation like this build, or use the existing position if you are simply swapping out the servo mounts from your current vehicle. Depending on your needs you might need to install a few of the kit's servo spacers too. Then install the kit's M3x8mm BHCS into each side until they are almost snug, and I recommend using a light amount of thread locker too.

Since each servo can slightly vary in width use a 1.5mm driver to snugly fit the 3x6mm set screws against the side of the servo so it feels centered correctly. These set screws also help to keep your servo in place too so that your steering is consistent on the track. Then once that is complete go back and lock down the M3x8mm BHCS on each side of the servo now.

Then attach it to the side rails with the kit's M3x10mm BHCS.

Next, I mounted up the Reedy S-Plus 17.5 Competition Spec Class Motor and also grabbed the stock range JConcepts Pinion Puck to select the pinion I wanted to use.

NOTE: For more information about the Pinion Puck, please read this earlier edition of The Garage:

http://www.jconcepts.net/garage/projects/jconcepts-stock-pinion-puck

The Reedy S-Plus 17.5 Competition Spec Class Motor includes a sensor wire but I opted to use the shorter 150mm wire from Reedy.

Then I installed the rest of the electronics into the B6.1D.

Now that we are nearing the end it was time to work on the body and wing. JConcepts offers a few different bodies for the B6.x platform now, but for this edition of The Garage I went with the S2 body and Aero wing. This body was first designed for the B6 series but it is also compatible with the new B6.1 platform with some minor adjustments. By that I mean it depends on what type of transmission you are running (stand-up, lay-down, or lay-back) since you might have to raise the body slightly with hook-and-loop fastener. Drivers can also choose between a standard or lightweight body, and for this build I used the standard version. Other features include a channeled roof with a center stabilizer bar and side pods that can be opened up to cool your electronics.

NOTE: Use this link to read an earlier edition of The Garage where we dive more into the lightweight body: http://www.jconcepts.net/garage/projects/b6d-options-build

I sent this body over to Zegers RC Graffixx to have my custom paint scheme applied to it, and it came back looking great as usual.

The S2 body also includes two Aero wings and they come molded into one piece so next I needed to trim one out for the B6.1D.

This task went quickly thanks to the Dirt Cut Precision Straight Scissors.

Also aiding me was the Precision Hobby Knife Handle when it came to trimming the wing lines.

Then I used the JConcepts Fin Reamer to ream out holes for the wing mounts which brings me to another option part.

Securing the Aero wing to the wing mounts would be the JConcepts Finnisher Wing Buttons. They are not any heavier than the stock parts since they are machined out of aluminum. Also, material has been removed from the center to reduce their weight, plus reveal a sharp looking hex design. And as always they are available in both blue and black color selections, plus they work with both the B6 and B6.1 series.

They also use a built-in countersink design so you can cleanly install them and lock your wing into place.
