Like I mentioned in the post on the ZooRacing Baybee a few days ago, carpet testing for this winter is now done for my part. This winter was obviously the the first winter running the new Tamiya TRF420.

Like most winters, November and December were very busy months with other stuff, meaning I did the bulk of testing with the TRF420 in January and February.

Again – like I wrote in the body testing post – the track which I have done all testing on is this – a small (25x14m) track with usually fairly low grip. During the winter we run a couple of different layouts, but due to the track area, it’s quite limited what you can do with layouts.

I have run my TRF420 with a Muchmore 13.5T with locked timing, blinky ESC and 5.0 gearing – i.e. ETS pro stock rules.

In addition, before any testing, I also did a race on another track, but what I could learn there was a bit limited due to damaging the car.

Having spent the past two months testing with the TRF420, the overall impression is that it has been very pleasant, and I’m certainly happy with how the car has worked.

Except for the aluminium chassis, I have not tested any special or option parts, so all testing has been with the standard car, trying to learn about the new platform.

Back-to-back testing the alu vs. std carbon chassis, I always prefered the carbon chassis, and this was also refelected in the consistency of the laptimes. On previous cars, an alu chassis on carpet always resulted in better consistency, but with the 420 on our track it was always the opposite. While laptimes would be similar, the car was more on the edge with the alu chassis, resulting in more small mistakes.

The setup I ended up with after testing is actually very close to the standard manual setup on the TRF420. Overall I tried quite a lot of things with the setup, but I always came back to this.

Finally – as always with these things – remember that these results are with me driving my car, in these particular conditions.

The Muchmore 5500 battery is a 235g 19.5mm high battery. Therefore I run a 30g SMJ weight plate underneath the battery.
