DK, Nielsen reports from 1/10 EP, 41 on podium
First Super Stock Podium for S411 in Denmark
On the last Sunday of November the 3rd round of the Danish Championship was held.
The only class driven was the Super Stock class running 17.5T with Zero Timing (Blinky Mode) and 7 minute heats.
Nicolai Nielsen was one of two Serpent S411 on the starting list for the race, and came out taking the 1st runner up spot on the podium, in his first Danish Championship race of the season. The other S411 also made the A-main.
A change of motor prior to the final practice runs made the lap times a few 1/10 better compered to Saturdays practice, but didn’t look fast enough for the top spot on the grid.
Nicolai made three good qualifying runs, putting in the best run in the second heat making 37 laps in 7:10.097 with a fastest lap of 11.242. Nicolai qualified as 4th for the A-main.
Four drivers, from 3rd to 6th, were within 2.4 seconds.
Mike Gosvig took the TQ spot with 38 laps in 7:07.915 running a hot lap of 11.025.
Nicolai had great help from club mate and also Serpent S411 driver, Steven M. Olsen, who chose not to attend this race, in order to be Nicolais pit crew for this race, and to work focused on set up for the car.
“I’m very grateful that Steven has agreed to help me out this weekend. He’s my good friend and team mate, so I find he’s the best for the job. He has proven his ability to get me going before. I haven’t had the best start to the season, so this race is mostly about finding the rhythm in order to get back on track with the Serpent car and hopefully start hitting the podium spots”, Nicolai said prior to the race
Traction was nice and stable all day long and the track had both fast sections and narrow technical parts.
During qualifying a problem with Nicolais ESC had occurred, therefore this was changed during the break prior to the first main. This change made the car easier to run and also made it a bit faster.
In the first main Nicolai got a great start from 4th. In the first corner he got clear through and took up the chase for the leader as second. Nicolai was very close all through the first main, but never got close enough for a passing move, and secured a 2nd place in the first main, only .5 sec. after Mike Gosvig who won the main.
The start of the second main didn’t go as good. Nicolai got on the wrong side in the first corner and was left last going out of the first corners. He got back up the field and had a great battle with one of the young drivers Rasmus B. Nielsen, who didn’t but a tire wrong through the last minutes and Nicolai had to settle for 5th. Mike Gosvig took the win and secured his overall win.
In the last main Nicolai got a fairly good start. Got up as third and had a god and long fight trough the heat with another of the young up coming drivers, Patrick Folman. This went an most of the heat, until about the 5 minute mark, where Patrick makes a mistake in a chikane touching a curb, making just enough room for Nicolai to pass on the inside to take second place. Nicolai maintained this position to the finish without problems. This result also secured Nicolai over all spot as 1st runner up in the race.
Nicolai made the fastest lap in both second and third A-main.
The race was won by Mike Gosvig, with Nicolai Nielsen as 2nd and Patrick Folman took 3rd place. The other S411 driven by Thomas Hjeresen came in as 7th overall.
After the race a very happy Nicolai had this to say;
“I am so happy right now. This is a big victory for my, despite it’s only 2nd place. It’s my first podium finish in a year. So this was really needed and means a lot to me. All my thanks and a lot of gratitude to my big help this weekend, Steven. I’m not sure I would be standing here with this trophy now, had it not been for him and outr team work. This is as much a victory for him as it is to me. This, the first podium finish for the Serpent S411 in Super Stock here in Denmark. And great many thanks to Serpent for giving me the chance to return and drive this great car. I look forward to the coming races.”
