Choosing the Right Hobbywing XeRun V10 G5 13.5t Setup

One of the most common questions I receive is which rotor and gearing combination to use with the new Hobbywing XeRun V10 G5 motors for BLINKY application. After plenty of testing, here are some baseline recommendations that should help you get started at your local track.

V10 G5 with GUS (Standard) Rotor
This is the more RPM-focused setup and is my preferred choice for low to medium grip conditions.
Why?
  • Smoother power delivery out of the corner
  • Less wheel spin on slippery surfaces
  • Better drivability and consistency
  • Runs cooler than the torque rotor version
Recommended starting setup:
  • FDR: 4.6
  • Mechanical Timing: 45°

V10 G5 with JUS (Torque) Rotor
The JUS rotor provides stronger bottom-end punch and is best suited for medium to high grip tracks.
Why?
  • Stronger acceleration out of slow corners
  • More immediate throttle response
  • High-grip tracks can fully utilize the additional torque without overwhelming rear traction
Recommended starting setup:
  • FDR: 4.3
  • Mechanical Timing: 43°
Motor Temperature Management
One thing I've noticed with the V10 G5 is that it naturally runs cooler than the previous G4R generation, and that's exactly how you want to keep it. As a guideline, I recommend keeping your motor temperature below 80°C when reviewing your data logs.

Another important indicator is the appearance of the motor coils. If you are pushing the gearing or timing too aggressively, the copper windings will begin to darken and eventually turn black. This is a clear sign that the motor is being overworked and adjustments should be made.

Remember that gearing, timing, rotor selection, and track grip all work together. Use these recommendations as a starting point, monitor your temperatures carefully, and fine-tune from there based on track conditions and driving style.
Q: Just to confirm, are the FDR recommendations above based on the 13.5T G5 motor shown in the photos? If so, what would you suggest as a starting FDR and timing point for a 17.5T G5 in blinky touring car?
A: Yes the above mentioned are info for the 13.5t. 17.5t is sold as torque version and I would recommend to start with FDR 3.8, timing no more than 44.

Q: What settings would you recommend for a boosted 13.5?
A: It is recommended to use standard GUS rotor for boosted this applies to both 13.5t and 17.5t. I will start with FDR 6.2, timing no more than 44 degrees.
