Losi's New Aftershock

Words: Gary Katzer

Team Losi has a proven track record of putting together top-quality RTRs with the right combination of durable chassis, industry-leading radio systems, and powerful, easy to tune engines. Taking what they have learned over their illustrious 25-year history, Team Losi once again raises the bar for performance, quality, and value but accomplishes these goals without breaking the bank. Taking what they have learned from other successes, Team Losi has just released their newest monster truck that provides hobbyists with the best value in its class, the Team Losi Sport Aftershock! Loaded with features such as a genuine JR computer radio, dual steering servos, potent .26 big block engine, chrome wheels, and more, the Aftershock is undoubtedly one of the biggest and best values out there.

Aftershock

A Proud Heritage

There's no arguing with success, and when it comes to creating Monster Trucks, Team Losi knows what they're doing. Their first entry into the class was so incredibly revolutionary that it became an instant success and received the coveted RC Car Action Truck of the Year award. The Aftershock features a proven design and is equipped with a truckload of features not found on other trucks in its class. The Aftershock is a terrific truck, carrying on Team Losi's tradition of including the right equipment for the application all in one box. From the M26SS engine, state-of-the-art computer radio system, 2-speed transmission, to its massive shocks and tires, the Aftershock comes as a complete package that absolutely dwarfs anything else in its class.

A Closer Look

The Aftershock has been designed to withstand the abuse that users are sure to throw at it. With this in mind, the Aftershock borrows many construction techniques with pervious Team Losi RTRs. While some monster trucks are equipped with .12-based small block engines, the Aftershock goes all out by featuring a big-block .26-size M26SS engine under the body. To provide the lifeblood to the engine, the Aftershock includes an oversized fuel tank which also serves to extend the time between refueling stops. When the M26SS is fired up and the Aftershock is set into motion, its sure-footed nature and superior suspension package become evident. The front and rear A-arms, hub carriers, knuckles, and bulkheads are all proven designs that are both functional and durable. Team Losi has spec-ed the Aftershock with huge Mega-Shocks which are three-times larger than the more common smaller-diameter shocks more commonly found on other monster trucks. The precision-molded shock bodies are threaded to allow precise ride height adjustment via the provided adjustment nut. The Aftershock rolls out on huge Claw tires that come preglued to gorgeous chrome-plated Magneto wheels. This combination tears up the terra firma and looks good doing it. A genuine JR computer radio system has more features and outperforms radios in other RTRs. The transmission leads the pack when it comes to features and durability as well. The  transmission uses all-metal gears, features a shift-on-the-fly two-speed transmission, and more. When you add up all these features, the Team Losi Aftershock clearly separates itself from the rest of the pack. The Aftershock is simply bigger, badder, and tougher than the competition, making it a better value at the same time.

Tuned Transmission

Monster trucks and plastic transmission gears just don't play well together. You won't find plastic gears in the Aftershock, as its transmission utilizes metal gears throughout its design. The inclusion of metal gears will save you time and money down the road. While the owners of other monster trucks may be heading to the hobby shop to replace broken or stripped plastic gears, Aftershock owners will enjoy the durability of the all-metal transmission. By taking this route, Team Losi has put together a gearbox that can take the abuse that big and powerful monster trucks are often subjected to. But Team Losi didn't stop there, equipping the Aftershock with a number of other key features that you won't find in other trucks in its class. The  transmission is considerably lighter and less complicated than other gearboxes out there. By using a simpler design, the Aftershock accelerates faster due to the reduction in rotating mass. It features a multi-disc slipper clutch on the transmission's top shaft to protect the internals of the transmission from damage due to harsh impacts and landings. For the best of both acceleration and top speed, the Aftershock utilizes a two-speed shift-on-the-fly transmission. The first gear allows excellent torque and, once second gear kicks in, the Aftershock continues to accelerate toward top speed.

Another premium feature on the Aftershock can be found at each end of the truck. Previously unheard of in its class, the Aftershock's front and rear diff cases are constructed out of lightweight yet strong aluminum. These aluminum cases are considerably stronger than plastic counterparts, handling that big block power, shaking off hits and impacts that may overtax and split other truck's plastic diff cases. Aluminum differential cases are normally expensive hop-up options, but not so on the Aftershock, making an already awesome value even better.

Engine

The Aftershock's Epicenter

A monster truck needs a monster power plant, and the Aftershock doesn't disappoint here. An all-new engine sits on the engine mounts and it is both powerful and reliable. The Aftershock utilizes a potent 3-port M26SS engine, capable of propelling it to speeds approaching 40 mph. But the M26SS isn't just about top speed as it has a generous torque curve, enabling the Aftershock to pull, climb, or run over just about anything in its path. Unlike other trucks in its class that come equipped with plastic mufflers, the Aftershock includes a complete aluminum exhaust system. The stinger has been strategically directed towards the ground and away from the inside of the body or electronics.

Upon closer inspection of the engine, a number of different features stand out. The Aftershock comes with a slide-style carburetor that includes two adjustment needles. Having separate high and low needles makes it possible to fine-tune your engine more easily than with a less sophisticated single needle. A three-shoe clutch provides the Aftershock with positive clutch engagement and excellent power delivery. There are two different ways to fire the Aftershock's potent M26SS engine. A proven and reliable heavy-duty pull starter comes bolted to the engine's backplate and, for the ultimate in convenience, Team Losi has also included a Spin Start adapter back plate. To utilize the Spin Start, simply install the included adapter onto the backplate and add one of the Spin Starter hand units. To make things even easier, you can use an electric drill to start your engine; simply pick up a Spin Start Hex Drive Rod, chuck it in your drill and squeeze the trigger. When compared to other trucks that use heavy, clumsy, and complicated on-board electric starter systems, it doesn't get much easier to start an engine.

Keeping Control

When you have a vehicle that weighs in at nearly 12 pounds and can travel at high speeds, you need a reliable and dependable radio system. The Aftershock continues its best-in-class claim by including a genuine JR radio system. A computer radio is normally an expensive upgrade with other trucks but is just another way that the Aftershock adds value. A JR XR2i computer based transmitter on 75MHz sends the signals to the included R125 receiver. The XR2i has a number of excellent features that aren't found in other trucks in this class that really suit themselves well to this application. From its 2-model memory, digital sub-trims, digital throttle, steering travel adjustments and more, the XR2i has all the features you could dream of and surpasses less feature-rich radios found in other RTRs. A lot of monster trucks are known for using underpowered steering servos that do not have nearly enough torque or speed. But the Aftershock uses two JR Z590MG steering servos that are tied together with a drag link. By using dual steering servos and tying them together, the Aftershock has gobs of steering and holding power. The Z590MG servos feature metal gears instead of weaker plastic ones. The metal gears in the Z590MG servos improve durability and the overall life of the servos. A JR Z270 servo has been tapped for throttle control and to apply the brakes. A side benefit to utilizing JR radio gear is that hobbyists will also receive JR's unmatched industry leading 3-year warranty on their equipment. If there's ever a problem, JR has you covered.

Topping It Off

Team Losi has always had some of the coolest-looking cars and trucks out there, and the Aftershock is no exception. An all-new body has been molded for the Aftershock, and it definitely looks awesome. Team Losi's outdone themselves with this one, as they have come with another realistic-looking and masterful paint scheme. The overall design and layout is exceptional and really helps the Aftershock stand out. From subtleties like having a molded-in clearance for the gear cover, glow-plug driver hole, and the opening for the fuel tank to the molded-in blower on the hood, the Aftershock's body is as functional as it is good looking.

Endless Options

Part of the fun of owning a monster truck is adding your own personal style and touch to it. When the bug to customize bites you, feel confident in knowing that Team Losi has a wide array of option parts available for you to enhance the performance and appearance of your truck. Swapping out the 4-cell receiver pack with a 5-cell rechargeable receiver pack not only saves you money in the long run, it also improves performance. The higher voltage output of the rechargeable pack will improve the responsiveness and torque of your servos. By replacing the included head with a high-compression one and installing a race-tuned exhaust system, for example, you can increase the acceleration and top end. If anodized aluminum is your thing, Team Losi has you covered there too. From different colored aluminum shock bodies, chassis plates, bulkheads and more, you can color coordinate your Aftershock any way you wish. You can further improve performance and looks with titanium nitride hinge pin and shock shafts and carbon fiber parts as well. With Team Losi Performance and Option Parts, you can truly make your Aftershock your own.

It seems like the world of RC Monster trucks keeps getting more and more crowded every day. With such a variety of trucks out there, making a decision as to which truck to go with can seem confusing. This is where the Team Losi Aftershock truly stands on its own. Whether you're looking for innovative designs, great performance, exceptional climbing abilities, or something that looks and sounds cool, the Team Losi Aftershock is the perfect choice for the hobbyist or backyard basher. The Aftershock also carries on the 25-year tradition and heritage that is Team Losi. When it comes to quality, customer support, replacement or hop-up parts and, of course, value look no further than the Team Losi Sport Aftershock. It's simply the best quality, biggest, and baddest truck in its class.
