- Tamiya RM01 - Brad Krans - Build & Tips -

I recently built up my RM01x, here are a few tips to run with the IFMAR 1/12 regulations:

- Smallest spur gear I could find to fit was a 80t, 64P. The diff rings are larger than the standard 1/12 on the market.

- Aftermarket spurs require a little bit of trimming on the inside of the gear to get an axle bearing to fit. The best way I found is to use a tapered body reamer and remove a small amount at a time until the bearing fits. Do this cautiously so the gear stays round on the axle. You will need to supply the bearing (6x9x3mm.)

- I trimmed the lower part of the front steering spindle and added a 1mm spacer on top so I could run a smaller diameter tire and still maintain a 3mm (the usual minimum at a track) ride height.

- Smallest tire size that I could get down to and maintain a minimum ride height was:
Front: 41.5mm
Rear: 43.5mm.
Our track bite comes up pretty fast so we usually need the smaller tires.

- The RM01x stock chassis is drilled for the AE R5 front suspension. This will allow for more adjustment and fine tuning. The chassis available earlier are drilled but not countersunk. I'm sure this is a running change.

- The main hopups I recommend are the aluminum servo saver (Part# 54369), reinforced carbon drag links (Part# 54460 ) and the V2 alum side spring holder (Part# 54478.) They make the rear suspension free(ier) and allows for better spring adjustment. This upgrade is also beneficial to the F104v2 kit.

I ran the RM01x in the modified class at my home Competition Hobbies carpet track. The car was very fast and only got better as I tightened it up. Our on-road turnout has really been growing and we have consistently been getting two heats of racers. I've also been running a lot of my TRF417x and have been doing some upgrades to the V5 options. I am completing the chassis and servo mount swap today so I can race tonight. I'll get a blog about that later.

Thanks to Tamiya USA, Speed Passion USA, Trakpower, Pro-line and Stickit1 graphics for all the support!

Brad
