To give some guidance for the set-up of the Project 4X, below we show some FAQ and the possible answers. What works best in the end depends also on driving style, surface and driver level.

DE = David Ehrbar
VW = Viktor Wilck

  • Start from the default set-up (asphalt / carpet) from our website, or your best set-up so far.
  • Before to start making changes make sure to check the car on general maintenance, running free, not tweaked , settings same left and right, electronics working well, body and tyres in good condition.
  • If time allows than only change one or max 2 related changes and go back to the previous set-up, if the change did not have the expected result.
  • To feel the effect of a change well, you can consider making bigger steps in the changes, and in case too big, move back a little again later, but at least you will know well what effect the change has.

  • Q: What to do when facing oversteer?
  • Corner entry
  • DE: there are 2 main ways to fight that: You can use change the bumpsteer in front (more shims on the front steering block), or you can change the roll damper oil (front harder, rear softer). The harder rolldamper oil you use in general, the stronger the effect of the roll damper oil change will be.
VW: can add shim on steering arm/upright. (+1mm)

  • Mid corner
  • DE: many setup changes have an influence on mid corner balance. The main thing to change mid corner steering is usually the roll spring. Harder front roll spring gives less mid corner steering, so that should help you. Don’t be afraid to use the purple or grey roll spring in front. You can also use more toe-in (3.0 or even 3.5 degree), but that will also change corner entry and exit.
VW: can go to harder roll spring (+1step). Or can go to softer heave spring (-1step)

  • Corner exit
  • DE: Here the first thing to do is use a softer diff. If you already use a soft diff, you can also try to use more front droop (lower number for the downstop setting). Another good option is change the rear bumpsteer. That means use more shims on the rear steering block.
VW: Can go to harder rear heave oil (+500cs). Go to softer rear roll spring (-1step).

Q: What to do when facing understeer?
DE: basically you do the opposite of the above oversteer situation.

  • Corner entry
  • DE: less shims on the steering block, harder rear rolldamper oil, softer front rolldamper oil.
VW: less shim on steering hub/upright (-1mm)

  • Mid corner
  • DE: softer front rollspring (but avoid using softer than red or orange), harder rear roll spring. Less toe in (typically 2.5 or 2.0)
    VW: softer roll spring (-1step)

  • Corner exit
  • DE: harder diff, less front droop, less shims on the rear steering block
    VW: less droop front (+1mm)

Q: What to do when lack of traction?
  • Mid corner
  • DE: try more camber all around, softer roll springs, harder heave damper oil (especially rear).
VW: more droop front/rear (-1mm). softer roll spring front/rear (-1step).

  • Corner exit
  • DE: softer diff
VW: more droop front/rear (-1mm). harder rear heave oil (+500cs)

Q: What to do if car lacks traction / slides under hard braking?
VW: Harder rear roll spring (+1step)
DE: if it lacks front grip, use harder front heave spring and/or front heave oil. If it gets loose under braking, use softer front heave spring and/or oil

Q: What to do if car is unstable on the straight line?
VW: harder roll oil front/rear (+1000cs)
DE: Use more rear toe-in, and more front toe-out. If it is only in high speed, you can also run more shims on the rear steering block to get more toe-in when the downforce builds up.

Q: What to do if the car lacks overall traction?
    VW: more droop (-1mm) / Softer roll spring front/rear (-1spep) / Softer heave spring front/rear (-1step)
DE: more droop, softer diff, harder heave damper, softer roll springs, more camber (but not more than 2.5 degree)

Q: What to do if car traction rolls?
VW: less droop (+1-2mm) / harder front roll spring (+1step) / softer rear roll spring (-1step)
DE: glue the sidewall, use less droop, harder front roll spring, softer rear roll spring. Softer heave damper oil. If it only happens when you touch the curbs, you can also try to run softer roll damper oil.

Q: What to do if I loose steering in fast corners / sweepers?
VW: more rear droop (-1mm) / softer roll oil front/rear (-1000cs) / less RRS shims outside on rear hub (-0.5mm)
DE: more droop all around, softer front roll springs, harder rear heave springs, less shims on the rear steering block, less toe-in rear

Q: What to do if the transition in fast left to ride sections is too slow?
VW: softer roll oil (-1000cs). Softer roll spring front/rear (-1step)
DE: change front bump steer (less shims on steering block). Use harder rear roll damper, softer front roll damper

    Good luck with above tips.
